About FossilMap

FossilMap is a free field recording platform for UK fossil hunters and amateur palaeontologists. It includes specimen recording, locality management, field trip tracking, tide planning and geological reference tools.

FossilMap is provided free of charge. No account is required. Your specimens, localities and photos are stored locally on your own device and never transmitted to our servers.

Ownership

FossilMap is a proprietary application. The following assets remain the intellectual property of FossilMap.

FossilMap owns

  • The FossilMap application and branding
  • Website content and design
  • Specimen code format and classification system
  • Report layouts and templates
  • Export formats and field trip workflows
  • Workflow and interface design

You own

  • Your specimen records
  • Your photographs
  • Your locality details and notes
  • Your field trip records
  • All locally stored content you create
  • Any imported content

Use of FossilMap does not grant rights to reproduce, copy or recreate any proprietary systems, methods or outputs.

Restrictions

Without written permission from FossilMap, you may not:

  • Reverse engineer or decompile any part of FossilMap
  • Reproduce report layouts or field trip templates commercially
  • Copy workflows, interface design or export formats for competing tools
  • Use FossilMap outputs to train or build competing systems

Data and Privacy

FossilMap is local-first. Your specimen records, GPS positions and photos are stored on your device only and are never uploaded to our servers.

FossilMap is provided as a field recording aid. Tide gauge data and geological reference information are provided for convenience only and may not always be accurate. Always check tide tables and local conditions from official sources before visiting foreshore or cliff-base sites.

FossilMap accepts no liability for decisions made based on data presented within the app.
