Your data stays yours.

FossilMap is local-first. Your specimens, GPS coordinates, photos and locality details stay on your device unless you choose to export or share them.
What we collect
FossilMap does not require an account, login or profile. You can use the full application without providing any personal information.
All private records you create in FossilMap — specimens, localities, field trips, photos, notes — are stored in your device's own local database (IndexedDB). They do not leave your device unless you export or share them.
Local storage only
Stored on your device
Specimens, localities, field trips, photos, notes, GPS positions, taxon records, field trip reports.
Not automatically transmitted
Find locations, specimen photos, locality details and collecting history are not synced to a FossilMap account or uploaded in the background.
We have no account database containing your private records. We cannot see your saved specimens, localities or field trip data unless you choose to send something through an export or form submission.
No tracking or analytics
FossilMap does not use analytics, tracking pixels, session recording tools or advertising networks. We do not track your location, behaviour or usage patterns.
The website uses no third-party tracking scripts. Website forms are sent through Web3Forms only when you submit them.
Data backups and export
FossilMap provides full backup and export tools. You can export all your data as a backup file at any time from the Settings screen. You remain in complete control of your records.
If you uninstall the app, your local data will be removed along with it. We recommend keeping regular backups.
External data sources
Online features may request map tiles, tide gauge readings or geological data from external sources. Those requests are separate from your locally saved specimen records and locality records.
